Epic Research data: ER patients who OD are rarely tested for fentanyl!

Global Edition Electronic Health Records (EHR, EMR) Epic Research data: ER patients who OD are rarely tested for fentanyl Five years of nationwide emergency room data show the rate of opioid overdoses dropped significantly, while deaths caused by synthetic opioids continued to rise, according to a new study from Epic and UMD. Credit: U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency Epic Research and the University of Maryland’s Center for Substance Abuse Research reviewed emergency room lab results and discovered that only 5% of U.S. overdose patients are tested for fentanyl and other synthetic opioids in the emergency room. While synthetic opioids are now the leading cause of death for Americans under age 45, fentanyl is not usually detected in routine toxicology screenings, and typically a test for it must be ordered separately, according to the briefing shared with Healthcare IT News.

The positivity rate for fentanyl soars:

The team used deidentified Cosmos data from Epic's EHR – a HIPAA-defined limited data set of more than 149 million patients from 172 Epic organizations serving patients in all 50 states. Looking at 315,000 emergency department overdoses that occurred between 2017 and August 2022, the researchers learned how infrequent toxicology screening for fentanyl is at the ER. "In this study, we had the unique opportunity to confirm this finding in many more hospitals. Because Cosmos data is both vast and representative of the U.S. population, it makes it possible to quickly observe this kind of nationwide challenge and inspire data-driven interventions," said Dr. Eric Wish, director at CESAR and coauthor of the study, in a prepared statement.

What is Aira EHR Oncology Software:

Aira EHR software has created ARIA(r), Oncology Information System, which is a solution to Oncology Information. The ONC-ATCB has certified it as a good software for EMR (Electronic Medical Records), and PM (Practice Management). It is complete and combines all disciplines that are involved in oncology treatment, such as radiology and surgical information. All of this information can be accessed on one platform, the Electronic Health Records (EHR).

ARIA EHR software features include the ability to evaluate the patient's responses to various treatments. The software also stores and documents the patient's medical history. The practitioner's job is made easier by the fact that they don't have to waste time and can instead analyze, assess and decide whether to use specific protocols or create treatment plans. The practice is meticulous in providing high-quality, consistent care for patients.
